Stop Buying Crap: Real Self-Defense for Real People


Lately, I see ads all over social media for self-defense gadgets geared towards women, and it’s driving me insane. Every day, countless men and women are shelling out money for keychain gadgets and flimsy alarms, thinking they’re investing in their and their loved ones’ safety.


Wives and daughters buy or receive these “self-defense” gadgets for peace of mind, but in reality, they’re nothing more than a false sense of security. Tiny pepper spray bottles, the so-called Self Defense Cat, and other pokey things

to hold in your hand, along with the ridiculous BIRDIE alarm—let’s be real, most of this shit is geared towards people who want to feel safe with minimal effort.


Spoiler alert: It’s all bullshit.


I promise you, alarms, phone apps, GPS trackers, and keys between your knuckles are about as effective as a chocolate teapot when it comes to stopping a real predator. Leading self-defense and martial arts experts, police officers, and security professionals all say the same thing:


No blinking, chirping alarm is going to save you from a kidnapping, beating, or rape. It’s time for a reality check.


The Harsh Truth About Self-Defense Gadgets

Let’s break down why these gadgets are failing you:


Keychain Gadgets: The Cat and Other Poky Things Marketed as self-defense tools? Portable? Sure. Even with some training, they’re questionable in effectiveness. Honestly, they’re just stylish accessories that won’t stop a determined attacker.


Pepper Spray: Non-lethal? Effective Maybe.Aiming it under stress is a nightmare. Predators don’t stand still and wait for you to aim. Different types of pepper spray exist, but all of them require training. Incapacitating someone in the heat of the moment is easier said than done.


Self-Defense Alarms: BIRDIE – Discreet? Perhaps. Effective? Not so much.These alarms depend on someone nearby to hear you. Blinking and chirping at 120dB… So what? One stomp and they’re done. It’s a deterrent at best if someone’s around to intervene—but what happens on a dark, deserted street or parking lot?


Apps on Your Phone: Location Apps or Security Company AlertsSounds good in theory, but in practice, it’s bullshit. GPS might help authorities find your PHONE or worse your body after the fact. Calling the police? They’ll get there after the damage is done. Betting your life on a smartphone app is a joke.


Cheap Tasers vs. Stun Guns: A $25 Taser from a Flea Market? You’re kidding me. Hollywood makes it seem like one zap drops an attacker instantly. Nope. 99% of the time, a cheap taser just pisses your attacker off more.

Only law enforcement-grade devices (Stun -Gun) have a chance, and even then, they require training—and possibly permits for civillian use.


The Problem with Over-Enthusiastic Self-Proclaimed Self-Defense Experts

Let’s talk about the garbage being sold under the guise of women’s self-defense.

Self-defense classes advertised as “women’s only” for a mere $25 and lasting one to two hours are fucking laughable. These seminars promise that a 125 lb female can fight off a 300 lb male predator with just three special moves.


Here’s a brutal reality check, sunshine:

There are no magic self-defense moves—for little people, big people, men, or women.


Violence is a language. Either you speak it, or you don’t. Men and women face similar threats and should be prepared similarly.

It’s time to crush the fairy tales people believe about self-defense, especially for women:


“Kicking them in the balls is the only strategy you need.”

Attackers won’t stand still for you to land the perfect shot. Even if you do, it’s a 50/50 chance it works. There are attackers wearing groin protection. What’s your next move?


“Just Runaway.”

Running sounds simple, but in the heat of the moment, it’s often too late. Your environment or attire could trap you. Training prepares you to make those split-second decisions effectively.


“Adrenaline Will Turn Me into the She-Hulk.”

Adrenaline does strange things—it can heighten senses, but it can also cause tunnel vision, auditory exclusion, shaky legs, and the sensation of time slowing down. Without training, adrenaline works against you.


“Using Keys Between My Knuckles Will Hurt Them.”

It’s more likely to shred your hands than stop your attacker. Let’s stop teaching this nonsense.


“You’ll Only Be Violently Attacked by a Stranger at Night.”

Over 71% of violent attacks against women are by someone they know. Awareness and preparation are crucial no matter the time, place, or relationship.


“Learning to Box is Great for Self-Defense.”

Boxing will eventually make you a bad ass striker as well as improves fitness and coordination but doesn’t prepare you for real-world scenarios like escaping grabs or chokes. Self-defense starts long before physical fighting.

While self-defense gadgets might seem appealing, real tools and training are what make the difference.
